Derry Airport is a modest one, found in England’s City of Derry. It is located about 11 kilometers from the city center, next to a bird sanctuary (which has caused some major safety concerns, as it makes aircraft using the airport prone to potentially fatal bird-strikes).
The airport is also known as the Eglinton aerodrome. It is, effectively, a private airport, operated by the Derry City Council under license number P620. As of the year 2009- the latest year for which we have the airport stats, Derry Airport hosted some 340,000 passengers.
The history of Derry Airport
Derry Airport, which is designated EGAE by the ICAO and LDY by the IATA, was initiated during the Second World War.
Not much happened on the airport (which was then just an airfield), until the year 1978, when London Derry City Council purchased it. Loganair went on to introduce the airports first scheduled flight service after that purchase; that being a flight between Derry City and the Glassgow city (where Derry City authorities reckoned the passengers would be able to get flights to take them wherever else they wanted). For a decade, that was the only flight to and from the Derry Airport. 1989 saw the introduction of the second scheduled flight, connecting Derry city to Manchester City. Subsequent years saw major investments in the airport (which was then only known as the Eglinton aerodrome) – culminating in its assumption of its current name in 1994.
The scheduled flight to Glasgow, Derry Airport’s flagship, was abandoned in 2009 because of what were termed as ‘fuel cost’ concerns.
